HAMMOND, La. – The No. 17 Southeastern Louisiana University football team held its first practice in full pads of fall camp Tuesday morning at Strawberry Stadium.
SLU head coach Frank Scelfo was impressed with how his team embraced the increased physicality of the first day in full pads.
“The first day of full pads is when we can start to see guys playing faster and players have an opportunity to stand out,” Scelfo commented. “We had some guys step up today. Not only some of our veterans that we expect to raise their game, but some new faces that we’re really fired up about.”
Tuesday marked the second full team practice for the Lions after they opened fall camp last week with four split-squad practices.
“We’ve had great energy since we’ve come together as a full team,” Scelfo stated. “We’ve seen a lot of bonds start to develop with different position groups, which is pretty cool to see.
“Our competitive character is really starting to show,” Scelfo added. “We’ve really been pleased with the level of energy and competition.”
Southeastern will practice Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m. until the first day of fall classes, set for Aug. 17. Starting with the beginning of the fall semester, SLU will practice Monday through Thursday at 3:45 p.m. and Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m. until the week of the Sept. 3 season opener at UL Lafayette.
Southeastern opens the 2022 season at the Ragin’ Cajuns in a 6 p.m. contest. The home opener is set for Sept. 17 versus Central Connecticut State.
