MUMBAI: Curators and groundsmen, it seems, are finally getting their due in Indian cricket. While the players enjoy all the spotlight, groundstaff too are now being recognized for their tireless efforts in toiling hard to ensure the smooth conduct of the game.
On Friday evening, Parsee Gymkhana felicitated its chief groundsman Nadim Memon, a former curator of the Wankhede Stadium, at its function to celebrate last season’s success, which saw them clinch four championships. Memon, a former managing committee member of the Mumbai Cricket Association, can be credited for having worked on the outfields and wickets of many grounds in Mumbai.
“Honouring Nadim Memon in appreciation of your loyal and dedicated service for the past 26 years. Thank you! For your hard work, commitment, and your contribution to our success,” read a message from the Parsee Gymkhana on a silver plaque it gifted to Memon, along with a shawl. The club also awarded Rs 16,500 each to the five maalis in Memon’s ‘team’. “Nadim bhai has looked after our ground for more than two decades. He has worked with complete dedication,” said Parsee Gymkhana cricket secretary Khodadad Yazdegardi. “It’s a wonderful gesture by Parsee Gymkhana. I’m so glad that they have recognized the contribution of curator and maalis in their success,” Memon said.
Former India batsman, ex-national selector and currently the chairman of the MCA‘s Cricket Improvement Committee was the chief guest on the occasion.
In May this year, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had announced Rs 1.25 crore prize money for curators and groundsmen at all the six staging venues of IPL-2022. In June, the MCA announced that it would reward its curators and groundstaff with Rs 25 lakhs for their efforts during IPL-2022.
Kanga League postponed again
The Dr HD Kanga League has been delayed again due to incessant rains. The traditional monsoon tournament, which was delayed due to rains by a week, was supposed to kick off on Sunday.
