PITTSBURGH – The American Volleyball Coaches Association added Shelton Collier, Pitt Volleyball’s all-time winningest coach, into its Hall of Fame. Collier, who coached at Pitt for nine seasons (1980-88), will be formally recognized, alongside three other inductees at the 2022 AVCA Convention in Omaha, Nebraska, on Thursday, December 15.
Collier was instrumental in establishing a winning tradition at Pitt. During his nine seasons at the helm, he led the program to its first-ever conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 1982. He reached 41 regular season wins twice (1980 and 1982), a record for most wins in a single season that still stands to this day.
By the end of his tenure, he had delivered four Big East Conference championships (’82, ’84, ’86, ’88), four NCAA Tournament appearances (’82, ’84, ’86, ’87) and six 30+ win seasons, ending his time at Pitt with a 294-94 (.758) record. His 294 wins still stands as the most in program history with current head coach Dan Fisher second on the list (227) heading into the 2022 season.
Prior to Pitt, Collier coached for 11 seasons at Georgia Tech, where he is also the winningest coach in program history, winning 271 matches. He would go on to spend 20 seasons at Wingate University in North Carolina, where he would record 553 wins, bringing his career total to 1,118, the seventh most all-time among NCAA Volleyball coaches.
