Less than a week before the start of the regular season, Bryan’s girls soccer team has a change in leadership.
Adam Subasic, who led the Golden Bears to a 15-win season and a share of their first Northwest Ohio Athletic League title in school history last year, stepped down as head coach on Saturday. The resignation was approved during the Bryan City Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday.
“I was put in kind of a tough situation where basically myself and the school did not agree on the direction we were going anymore, and unfortunately I was forced into a position where I had to step down,” Subasic said. “Obviously, it was not something I anticipated or had planned on, but certain events led to that.
“Obviously it’s not something that I was planning on.”
Assistant coach Sarah Thiel was approved as interim head coach on Monday, while Delaney Miley will be an assistant.
Subasic compiled a 31-17-5 record in three seasons as the Golden Bears’ head coach. He was named the NWOAL coach of the year in 2021 after guiding the Golden Bears to a 15-1-2 record, including 4-0-2 in conference play. Bryan, which shared the league title with Evergreen, went unbeaten in the regular season before falling to St. Marys Memorial 2-0 in a Division II sectional final.
Subasic shared NWOAL coach of the year honors in 2020 after the Golden Bears went 8-8-1 overall (3-3 NWOAL). Bryan won six of its last seven regular season games after starting the year 2-6-1.
“We had a great run and I appreciated all the time and effort that the girls and the parents put into it,” Subasic said.
“Bryan City Schools thanks Adam Subasic for his service to the girls soccer program. BCS is now moving in a different direction for the head coaching duties following his resignation,” said Bryan athletic director Chad Savage, who declined to comment further on Subasic’s resignation.
The Golden Bears, who canceled Thursday’s scrimmage at Genoa, Friday’s practice and Saturday’s alumni game, hosted Van Wert in a scrimmage on Monday at Recreation Park. The Golden Bears will take on Anthony Wayne in a scrimmage on Wednesday before starting the season at 7 p.m. Friday at home against Toledo Bowsher.
